A tearful dog owner has been reunited with a pet who vanished 10 years ago, leaving his family heartbroken.
Touching pictures show the Labrador retriever, named Samson, being hugged by the man who thought he was gone forever.
Samson had disappeared a decade earlier, and is now an elderly dog.
The adorable pet had endured a torrid time since going missing, and was recently taken in at the City of San Antonio’s Animal Care Services facility.
The shelter said on its Facebook page that Samson, who is now white-faced, was in “pretty rough shape” when he was taken in.
Incredibly he was scanned for a microchip, and staff discovered that he had one.
They contacted his stunned owners, and the man – named by the shelter as Mr C – rushed to pick him up.
His owner, who was sad for the years he had lost, knelt down and softly said: “Samson, it’s me. Do you remember me?”
The shelter wrote on its Facebook: “Samson gently and slowly walked up to him and sniffed his hand.
“We could tell Mr. C was holding back tears as he said, ‘They took the better years from us.'”
The shelter urged people to have their dogs microchipped, writing: “We are so grateful that they can be together now.
“We can never stress enough how important it is to microchip your pets and microchip licensing is the law here in San Antonio.”
Staff added: “Congratulations on your reunion, Mr. C and Samson! We hope you can make some beautiful new memories.”
